Statistics
Hunger is a serious issue in our state, and considerable evidence indicates that lack of adequate nutrition can cause health and learning problems. Inadequate nutrition particularly impacts the young and elderly. The 2006 Project Bread hunger study found that hunger existed in 18% of the households in low-income Massachusetts communities, an increase of 10% over three years. The 2007 study emphasized the degree of the hunger problem in Massachusetts, stating that food insecurity increased 22% between reporting periods of 2000-02 and 2003-05.

Low-income families and individuals run out of food each month due to their limited income and the high cost of living, forcing them to make the choice of purchasing food or paying their bills each month.

The Merrimack Valley exceeded its goal to distribute 1.8 million pounds of food in FY 2007, and shipped 2.2 million pounds.  This translates into 1,852,32 meals.

"I was forced to choose between a prescription for my daughter and food for our family . . ."
Josie was stunned when the pharmacist told her the cream for her toddler's rash was going to cost $50.00. That was after the insurance portion. This happens to many single, working parents who must pay rent or mortgage, childcare expenses and car payments. Food pantries served by the Merrimack Valley Food Bank assist families like Josie's to stretch their food dollars. They provide supplementary food such as canned vegetables, fruit, peanut butter and personal care items.
