Freedom Isn’t Free – George’s Story

George is a 24 year old Marine Corp veteran of the War in Afghanistan.  He returned home from deployment with injuries sustained when an IED exploded while he was on patrol. George is waiting for his GI Bill benefits to come through so he can attend college. George would have re-enlisted, as he loves the Marine Corps, but suffers from headaches and back pain as a result of his injuries.
George lives with his mother since the average rent in his hometown is $1200 for a studio apartment, and relies upon food from a local community meal to get through the month.

George also volunteers to clean up after the meal service occasionally, enabling him to feel like the food he receives is more like a “hand up” than a “hand out”.
